Modern Fairytale Series: Max and Eanna

*Sometimes it is so easy to get wrapped up in what is wrong with the world, that we forget to celebrate the love and goodness that is in our lives.  I wanted to do an interview series about modern relationships and their dynamics.  What do you celebrate about your relationship? What keeps you and your partner together? Let's hear it and remember that even with all that is wrong with the outside world, sometimes the best spot is in the arms of your cherished partner!

Name(s):
Max & Eanna

Age(s):
33 (M) 31 (E)

How long have you been together:
Officially about to hit our 3 yr anniversary!

Are you married, engaged, dating, domestic partnership:
As close as you can get to married  without the papers.

How long have you known each other:
We met in Spring 2009 (so almost 6 years! ) when I first moved to Pittsburgh from KC. He was working part time at that point at the Halloween mask manufacturer that changed my life. I was married at the time and had a 2 year old son. I was scared and exhilarated by the prospect of my new career making everyday Halloween!

How long were you together before you took the next step in your relationship: (not necessarily marriage, ex: how long were you friends before you started dating? how long were you engaged before marriage?)
So we were good friends for about 2 years before things changed.  Because of our circumstances, we went from 0 to 100 in about 12 months. As I mentioned, I came to Pittsburgh married, but in less than 2 years, my husband became a stranger and left me and my son with 3 days to figure life out! Max, and another coworker dropped their lives and moved in with my son and I to help cover expenses since I became a single parent almost overnight! Our friendship was strong, but being together at work all day, than at home all night, the romance developed quickly easily and organically!

What initially attracted you to your partner?
We shared SO many interests! Halloween, horror movies, spfx, tea, magic, reading, and dinosaurs! It was like we were cut from the same cloth even though I'm from the Midwest and he is from New York! We are both the youngest of 3 children. Each family has 2 boys and 1 girl. Both of our parents have been married to each other for over 40 years AND have used the same brand of natural health products for over 30 years!!!!what are the odds of that!!!

What is your favorite thing/attribute about your partner?
Too many to list! He is kind, handsome,thoughtful, passionate  romantic,sincere, trustworthy, noble,  chivalrous , brave,humble  generous,  and reliable!  Not to mention  he is a brilliant  writer and he showers me with love notes! For the first time in my life I feel like I have been seen for what I truely am, and loved deeply for it!

Do you live together, if so how long?  Do you have children and/or pets together?
So we have lived  together  for  a little over 3 years, and we bought a beautiful 100 year old house 2 Christmases ago! To the relationship,  I bring Finnigan Cutty is my 8 year old boy who Max treats as his own. He stepped up when my ex stepped out, and my life is more beautiful  every day because of it! Max brought Ralphus T Wormwood,  the sweetest  laziest handsomest 12 year old mut in the land!

What is your secret to a successful relationship?
Mad love, passion, and honesty! It may sound cliche, but he inspires me to be better in everyway! He loves me so completely I never wonder how he feels. He tells me he loves me about 100 times a day (and has since the beginning )  So many of my past troubles were routed in self doubt and self critiques.  He told me he loves all of me, scars and all, but that i need to trust him and his love and not to test it. He makes me believe by his actions as much as his words. He is a gem and i will never let him go!

What is your parting advice that you would like to leave for other couples?
Be honest  with yourself  about what you really want out if a relationship.  DONT SETTLE!!! Don't  get married or have babies thinking it will bring back or will create passion or honest love. IT WONT! To be any good in a relationship,  you must first be able to love yourself. It is not fair to ask another person to fill your soul. Fill and Fulfill  yourself and the rest will be cake. Games are for middle school, leave them for game night, or the bedroom ;)

Modern Fairytale Series: Alan and Hilary

Name(s):
Hilary & Alan

Age(s):
26 & 31

How long have you been together:
6 years-married 4 (going on 5)

Are you married, engaged, dating, domestic partnership:
He put a ring on it.

How long have you known each other:
 6 years

How long were you together before you took the next step in your relationship: (not necessarily marriage, ex: how long were you friends before you started dating? how long were you engaged before marriage?)
Well... I met Alan on eharmony. (Two thumbs waaaaay up if you haven't tried it yet and you're looking). He lived in Kansas City and I lived in a suburb outside of Chicago. We chatted for about a month before we met in person (I brought two of my friends with for safety). Once I met him, I knew for sure he was the guy I would be with. So much so, I cried because I quickly realized all the plans I had for my own life were about to radically change. I was only 20, still in college, and had recently decided that I wouldn't get married-ever. My future was fostering kids & cats, but living the highlife in an apartment in Chicago until my first gray hair showed up. He foiled all my cat lady plans! Ugh!

Well, I knew. He knew. We both knew after that. A month later when I was visiting him, I found an engagement ring in his junk drawer while looking for batteries. I didn't open it! I called him and told him to come home and put that sucka somewhere I wouldn't find it because the temptation was too much! I didn't want to ruin his plan. 3 months later we were engaged on a beach in Seattle. About 1 year after that, we were married. 2 years later our first kiddo Emmett arrived. We just had our second baby, Dottie 6 months ago.

What initially attracted you to your partner?
My hubs is the sweetest & most thoughtful person. He would send me pictures in the mail and turn them into post cards. On each one he would write how the picture was beautiful-like me-and how whatever beautiful thing in the photo would remind him of me in someway. That is just the tip of his thoughtfulness  iceberg. Once you have kids, it gets harder to be thoughtful, but he still manages to do it. On Monday, he sent me the sweetest OK GO song called Lullaby. He said the lyrics reminded him of me and how they were beautiful. :)

What is your favorite thing/attribute about your partner?
Besides his stellar personality (& awesome dad skills) my guy is a babe! He has the most handsome eyes and the sweetest smile. He knows how to make me laugh and he is there for me when I cry.

Do you have children and/or pets together?
We have lived together 5 years. We have 2 beautiful kids-Emmet (2.5) and Dottie (6 months) and Harley our Bassett hound is 6 years old.

What is your secret to a successful relationship?
As much awesome stuff as I said about Al and me, we do fight! And sometimes being married feels more lonely than being single (imagine feeling isolated from the one person you care about the most? Ultimate loneliness). But all that stuff happens. Life is real and babies leave you tired. SO. TIRED. Alan also works a job where he is gone often. It's hard to put in the effort in sometimes. I'm not a marriage expert, but I'm pretty good with people, and I know that if I make eye contact with Alan and smile at him, he smiles back. The secret might be that. Don't forget about how much you love each other.

What is your parting advice that you would like to leave for other couples?
Remember how much you love each other, at every moment of your relationship. Let yourself be vulnerable with him and let him be strong for you, sometimes. (I have to tell myself it's okay to do that...because it is!)

Top 5 things I enjoy about the Holidays

I, normally, am the person that is decorating for Christmas before thanksgiving rolls around.  I am normally the person who has her entire Christmas shopping done, and wrapped, way before anyone else. Holiday Cards, mailed December 1.

This year, unfortunately, that is not the case.  Since being diagnosed with cancer, having surgery, and a few other life curve balls, that I am not ready to talk about, have happened, this year I have been 'off'.

I didn't get out halloween decor, or hand out treats. I certainly didn't do any party planning for Thanksgiving, and Christmas, well, it has taken a back seat to everything.  So, since I haven't been in a holly, jolly mood, I thought it might be fun to do a little list about the things about Christmas that I do really love.

  1. Spending Christmas Eve at my Grandpa and Gramma Wetherington's House.  For at least the last 10 years, if not more, my mom's side of the family spends our evening with my grandparents.  It is casual and we usually just spend time together, my mom and gramma make more food than any family can possibly eat, and it is really nice.  I will be there this year as well and can't wait to see everyone.
  2. Dishman Family Christmas.  Growing up, my dad's side of the family always went to my Grandpa's House and we would have lunch, and usually stay for dinner, and stay longer playing games and the adults would play trivial pursuit or cards and it was just a lot of fun, filled with a lot of memories!  As I got older it has progressed into a family breakfast with uncles, aunts, cousins, second cousins, etc.  I have to say I really really enjoy it!  This side of my family has a lot of cousins and we are all pretty close in age, so it is always fun to see them and catch up.  Plus, hello, breakfast food is awesome, and it gives a break from all the heaviness of holiday foods.
  3. Andy's Frozen Custard.  If you live in Springfield Missouri, you know what's up.
  4. Any excuse to get hot chocolate.  Any excuse.
  5. Even though I hate driving, getting in my car and knowing my family is just a few hours away, is always a good feeling.

I hope your Holidays are everything you want and need them to be.  Really, I am just awaiting a new year, the new possibilities!

Modern Fairytale Series: Katherine and Daniel

*Sometimes it is so easy to get wrapped up in what is wrong with the world, that we forget to celebrate the love and goodness that is in our lives.  I wanted to do an interview series about modern relationships and their dynamics.  What do you celebrate about your relationship? What keeps you and your partner together? Let's hear it and remember that even with all that is wrong with the outside world, sometimes the best spot is in the arms of your cherished partner!
xoxo Katty Delux

Name(s):
I'm Katherine but I go by K@ (because I'm clever and memorable) he is Daniel

Age(s):
we are both 28, he just turned it but I'm 6 months older so I'm a 'seasoned' 28 haha.

How long have you been together:
we have been official for almost a year and a half. (which for me is a lifetime!)

Are you married, engaged, dating, domestic partnership:
we are just dating, he is down for a trip to the courthouse but I'm a bit more cautious just because I don't want to be another statistic.

How long have you known each other:
I met him a little over 2 and a half years ago, when I was meeting some potential roommates via Craig's list. They had no clue I'd be so awesome haha.

How long were you together before you took the next step in your relationship: (not necessarily marriage, ex: how long were you friends before you started dating? how long were you engaged before marriage?)
We got together as a couple almost a year after initially meeting. We never dated or acted on anything while we were roommates, few months after he moved out he made a 'move' and then shortly after moved in with me. Again sorta.

What initially attracted you to your partner?
Hes a genuine good guy. Heart of gold! Hes not handsome in the society's conventional sense, he's missing most of his teeth and thinks he is too skinny but I couldn't care less. Looks can change in an instant. As morbid as it sounds an accident could take all of your physical characteristics away and then what's left? He will always be a gentle and compassionate man and I love that.

What is your favorite thing/attribute about your partner?
His loyalty. He is fiercely loyal even when he should have given up with someone or something.

Do you live together, if so how long?
We have lived together almost the whole time we have known each other. Minus about 6 months (before we dated)right in the middle.

Do you have children and/or pets together?
We have 2 cats. One was my hellion before we got together and then last new years we got little Lulu a friend from the shelter, Smokey aka Big guy.

What is your secret to a successful relationship?
Get mad/sad/glad whatever. Go ahead and feel what you feel so that you can get rid of it. Never hold on to those emotions though, feel them and move on. I personally held on to hurt and anger and it just makes you an emotional bottle rocket. Explosion, party of 1.

What is your parting advice that you would like to leave for other couples?Enjoy each other. Enjoy all the unique and different characteristics your partner has because there will never be anyone quite like him/her/zim/zer.

2014 was actually a pretty horrible year for me.  I almost cut my pinky off new year's eve 2013, had to have surgery for nerve repair, was diagnosed with cancer, and to have surgery for cancer removal, and well have been trying to get off paxil and have watched some pivotal relationships dissolve in my life.

Top 5 favorite things about midwestern autumns

  1. First of all autumn in the midwest is short lived, so you just have to soak it up while you have it.  Autumn can last 2 weeks, or 12 weeks.  You never know because the weather in the middle of the country is so fickle.
  2. Colorful trees make the changing season, the season of death, worth all the heat you put up with during the summer.  I seriously love each day that comes with the changing leaves.  The tree in my front yard is a maple tree, and the first day I notice the tips of the leaves starting to turn red, and I just die inside, because I know it is going to erupt with fire colored leaves in a few weeks.  It is beautiful.
  3. PUMPKIN PATCHES!  I love getting pumpkins and gourds and mums.  When I see the first sign advertising pumpkins for sale, well, I get very excited.  There is nothing better than getting up on a crisp fall morning, driving to a field out in the middle of Missouri or Kansas and strolling around with your love, or your family, and picking out the perfect pumpkin.  Plus most places have hot apple cider, caramel apples, and lots of fun.  It makes for a really good day.
  4. Every hot drink that I can consume.  I drink coffee year round.  Usually always hot, even if it is 100 + degrees outside.  However, when there is a cold bite in the air, there is seriously nothing more delicious than a cup of hot chocolate (perhaps with some mint schnapps) or a mug of apple cider (hello fireball) and sitting on your porch, or around a fire pit.  It is the best way to enjoy the autumnal nights.
  5. Fireplaces.  If you are lucky enough to have a working fireplace, then you know what I am talking about.  I love the smell of wood burning and just being warmed by this hearth of heat.  Curl up with a good book, and mug of something delicious, and a big ol fire. Love Love LOVE.
